The Opportunity

Team Horizon is seeking an EHS Engineer to ensure that the highest standards of Environmental Health and Safety are maintained throughout the plant in an ever-changing business environment.

Foster a culture of continuous improvement while also ensuring that the site complies with all statutory Employment and EHS related legislation, Company Corporate Standards and Company Policies.

Ensure compliance with all relevant EHS legislation and develop systems and procedures that optimises the safety, health and environmental performance

The Role

  • Provide direction and support to the site in meeting the requirements of the Company Global EHS Management and Technical Standards, ISO and OHSAS standards and other external regulations
  • Support the development, implementation and maintenance of the Site EHS Strategic Plan and regularly review this plan with site management
  • Liaise with Managers / Team Leaders to ensure employees are trained to a defined competency standard with all applicable EHS policies and procedures
  • Perform Risk assessments throughout the plant and oversee and monitor training on risk assessments
  • Oversee and ensure that employees and contractors are performing their roles in compliance with all EHS standards
  • Manage the EHS Assessment of all new chemicals and processes
  • Implement ongoing evaluation of EHS awareness activities and develop continuous improvement on EHS programmes
  • Provide EHS reports to Division and Corporate as requested
  • Support, improve and continuously monitor the Site Emergency Response Plan to ensure it meets the requirements of changing processes
  • Support the Emergency Response Team during an EHS emergency
  • Support EHS activities during construction phases
  • Assist in induction and training of new and/or existing employees
  • Auditing to ensure compliance with safety standards and with the corporate management and technical standards
  • Monitor and achieve environmental targets such as recycling, waste, emissions etc.
  • Liaise with the occupational health personnel to ensure compliance with all health-related requirements
  • Maintain the hazardous occurrence and accident register
  • Comply with the EHS policy and procedures and demonstrate EHS best practices in all work activities
  • Report any EHS incidents and/or Near Misses (unsafe acts and conditions) immediately to your supervisor and always raise the event in eAchieve
  • Support a culture of EHS excellence by recognizing and submitting opportunities for EHS improvement on eAchieve
  • Attend all required EHS training and medical surveillance programs
  • Wear PPE as required
  • Conduct risk assessments and identify preventative and corrective actions
  • Carry out routine occupational monitoring assessments. Accurately sample occupational exposure levels, (including dust, noise, chemicals, and lighting)
  • Interpret results and address any inadequacies in current safeguards
  • Write detailed and accurate reports
  • Prepare/review SOP’s, WISOP’s and training programmes as required
  • Present training and awareness programmes on EHS related topics
  • Maintain and improve all aspects of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
  • Conduct display screen equipment and pregnant employee risk assessments
  • Carry out regular EHS audits to identify and minimise risks to the company and the employees
  • Conduct RPE Face Fit Testing for the site. Ensure PPE compliance
  • Promote a safety culture
  • Manage site Safety Data Sheets
  • Conduct accident and incident reports and implement a plan of action to correct non-compliant behaviours or conditions
  • Participant in commissioning of a capital project
  • Manage time effectively and prioritise to meet multiple and tight deadlines

The Person

  • Degree in Environmental Engineering / Science, Occupational Safety & Health, or related discipline is a necessary requirement for this position, as ability to understand scientific process and implement EHS systems is a fundamental prerequisite in this role
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment supporting EHS Systems
  • Detailed knowledge of legislation, policies, strategies, and systems needed to implement and maintain a regulated Environmental Health and Safety organization
  • Good leadership skills in identifying and correcting EHS issues through effective communication and strong interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Project management experience and ability to influence others
