Job Description:

Does the opportunity to lead and inspire a critical team motivate you? Would you like the autonomy to play a pivotal role in the investment of new analytical technology and processes?

As Head of Analytical Services you’ll be responsible for the leadership of the technical teams for three laboratory sites (including a brand new 1000 m2 microbiology and cryptosporidium laboratory) covering a region. Analytical Services undertake sampling, microbiology, cryptosporidium and chemistry to ensure our drinking water quality exceeds the standards set down by the DWI, so you’ll work with an Industry leading Laboratory Information System to drive both quality standards and efficiency.

This isn’t a standard day to day laboratory management role - yes you’ll be responsible for the day to day performance management of your team; however there’s much more of a strategic/technical nature than that; you’ll be shifting between tactical operational management and defining the medium to long term objectives of Analytical Services to ensure alignment with regulations, accreditation and Severn Trent strategy.

There is a huge breadth of variety in role including safety, technical, financial, process, quality and customer. This is a great opportunity to influence the future direction of the business through interaction and collaboration with a number of other business leads across Severn Trent.

So let’s talk about the skills and experience you’ll need for this role:

It’s preferable that you have had experience of a similar role in the water/water treatment sector, however this is not essential; you may instead have had experience of working in regulated labs to UCAS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation standard. Due to the technical nature of this role you’ll need to be either a Chartered Chemist or Chartered Microbiologist with a strong track record of leading people and change.

Flexibility is important as you’ll be working to your plans but you’ll be required to be reactive and respond quickly to emerging issues. People skills are key as not only will you be responsible for around 150 people in total, but you’ll also manage the relationship with DWI/UCAS through face to face meeting and leading any audits.

You’ll need to have good commercial acumen as you’ll have control of a £6m budget within a FTSE 100 company. Industry influence would really help you as you’ll need to ensure that your teams support technical, quality and regulatory forums across the UK related to sampling or analytical activities.

Severn Trent benefits include:

* Salary upto £56,500
* Bonus upto 20%
* Car Allowance
* Fantastic Pension scheme
* 31 days’ holiday plus bank holidays with the option to buy or sell up to 5 additional days per year

Full range of Flexible benefits such as:

* SMART water – save money on your bills
* Private medical insurance
* Dental Insurance
* Childcare Vouchers

You’ll need to be located within commutable distance of one of our sites at either Bridgend (Mid Glamorgan), Shelton (Shrewsbury) or Church Wilne (Nottingham). However there will be an expectation to travel to the other sites including Severn Trent Centre in Coventry. (headcount 1)
