Job Description:

Looking for a challenging position in an
international research organisation?
Join the ESRF, the European Synchrotron!
The ESRF, the European Synchrotron, is an international research facility based in Grenoble, France. Thanks to high-level, innovative engineering and cutting-edge vision, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research institutions worldwide, welcoming more than 6 500 scientists every year in fields such as biology, medicine, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials and surface science, and physics. The ESRF is supported by 22 countries and employs 650 staff.
We are currently seeking to recruit a:
Software Engineer
Time-limited contract (3 years maximum)
The ESRF has started an ambitious modernisation programme named "Extremely Brilliant Source” (EBS). It will replace the existing storage ring by a brand new ring with challenging characteristics. As part of the EBS, the 2D detector data acquisition system will be upgraded.
You will join a team of 18 software developers in the Beamline Control Unit (BCU), contributing to the development of LIMA, an open source software library for image acquisition. LIMA has been developed at the ESRF in order to unify the software integration of the 2D detectors for scientific experiments, with many contributions from other European research facilities and private companies. It is used intensively at the ESRF, as well as in other facilities and laboratories. You will work on evolving the LIMA project to improve its suitability for higher performance experiments, including distributed (multi-computer) architectures for the parallelisation of image acquisition.
Your missions will be the following:
  • Participate in the development of LIMA2: performance of multi-image HDF5 file writing, improvement of memory management and dissociation of data acquisition from data processing dynamics
  • Participate in the design and implementation of LIMA3: multi-computer data acquisition and/or processing
  • Contribute to the integration of new generation detectors with LIMA2 and LIMA3, including the installation and commissioning on the ESRF beamlines
  • Carry out the completion of unit testing and continuous integration for the project
  • Higher university degree (Master, MSc, DESS, Diplom, Diploma, Ingenieria Superior, Licenciatura, Laurea or equivalent) in Computing Science, Software Engineering or related area
  • 3 to 5 years of professional experience in software development
  • Skills in C++ and Python programming, and object-oriented software architecture
  • Experience in the field of fast data acquisition, parallel data processing, HDF5 file format and distributed architecture systems would be a strong asset.
  • Curiosity and good communication skills are required, so that you may interact with people of different domains such as physicists, electronics and software engineers.
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
The annual gross salary will be within the range 34 – 40 k€ and additional allowances may apply.
The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.
If you are interested, please apply online by January 10th 2018.
