The ESRF, the European Synchrotron, is an international research facility based in Grenoble, France. We are currently seeking to recruit a:

Post-doctoral Fellow in Accelerator Physics
Time-limited position, ref. PD/BDG

The ESRF storage ring is undergoing a major upgrade program (EBS, Extremely Brilliant Source) consisting of a complete replacement of the existing ring, foreseen to lead to an emittance reduction of a factor 30 in the horizontal plane, placing the ESRF at the leading edge of the synchrotron light source research community. In view of the commissioning of this new ring foreseen to start in December 2019, the Beam Dynamics group, in charge of lattice commissioning, is opening a postdoctoral Fellow position.

You will take an active part in the preparation and execution of the new storage ring and beamline commissioning, with an emphasis on lattice characterization and optimization. During this phase you will be expected to work on shift over extended periods.  You will be given responsibilities over specific tasks or aspects of the ring commissioning, and will be asked to perform beam studies, advanced computations and to develop related tools, in collaboration with other groups from the Accelerator and Source Division, and with the goal of delivering the design performance of the new storage ring.

In the framework of the commissioning of the new ESRF storage ring, your activities will include:

  • Test and validation of new equipment
  • Commissioning planning and preparation
  • First turn and closed orbit establishment
  • BPM offsets and beam-based alignment studies
  • Lattice characterization and optimization
  • Collective effects studies and minimization of their impact on the overall performances
  • Development of tuning, modelling and control software tools

Part of your work will be done in shifts, following ESRF regulations.

Job Requirements:


  • PhD in Physics or related discipline obtained less than 3 years ago
  • A strong background in accelerator physics, knowledge of lattice design codes (Accelerator toolbox, MADX) and practical experience on a running machine is expected
  • Good programming skills (Python, Matlab, C++) would be an important asset
  • Team work capability and good communication skills are essential
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)


Contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18 month period. The annual gross salary will be 42 k€ and additional allowances may apply. The ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.
