What Is Psychometric Testing?

If you are applying for a new job, you have probably heard the term psychometric testing. You may be a little bit confused, especially as employers use the term ‘psychometric test’ to refer to many different forms of assessment. This is because psychometric testing is an umbrella term used to describe all the tests used by employers to assess a candidate’s performance. The term psychometric testing includes three main branches: aptitude tests, behavioural tests, and assessment day exercises.
What Are Aptitude Tests?
Aptitude tests evaluate a candidate’s general knowledge, technical knowledge, reasoning, and skills. These tests are usually given online with time constraints. Numerical tests come in two main forms: numeracy tests and numerical reasoning tests. Numeracy tests focus on basic math calculations, while numerical reasoning exams assess more abstract math skills. Verbal tests focus on two main concepts: text analysis and linguistically-based questions. Text analysis involves reading passages and answering questions, while linguistic questions focus on word knowledge. Technical tests evaluate an individual’s technical abilities according to those needed for the specific position they are applying for.
What Are Behavioural Tests?
Behavioural tests are used to assess a potential candidate’s traits and whether they match those needed for the job. These tests are often untimed but lengthy. The most common behavioural tests are personality tests, leadership assessment tests, and situational judgement tests. Personality tests are used to create a personality profile of the incoming candidates. Leadership assessment tests focus on assessing whether a candidate has the personality traits needed to be a leader. Situational judgement tests present candidates with work-related scenarios, evaluating how they respond in each situation.
What Is Involved in an Assessment Day Exercise?
Assessment centre exercises are a form of assessment involving interpersonal interactions. The exercises vary in format from employer to employer. They may include role-playing tasks, group exercises, presentations, and case studies. These tasks are usually given under time constraints to stimulate a real-life work environment.
What Should I Do to Prepare?
It is crucial to take the time to prepare before your assessment day. This will help to eliminate stress as well as ensure your best characteristics come out. Practising online is the most effective way of preparing. When you take an online practice test, you experience the same time constraints as those on the actual exam.
