Would you like to have a job where you know that your work is making a difference in the world? In particular, helping protect indigenous peoples from eviction and destruction of their lands.

Survival International is one of the biggest charities in the world and has been fighting for indigenous people's rights since 1969. Now we need somebody to help us with our infrastructure.

This position will work with and report to our web team.

You must have the right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities
  • Be committed to Survival's aims and ideals.
  • Take care of all our network infrastructure and systems.

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of all our data (backups, encryption, automated database dumps, etc.)
  • Configure and maintain our file share system.
  • Audit the application flow security of all software used by the staff and suggest improvements (password management, 2FA, etc.)
  • Help maintain Survival's physical network infrastructure (wired internet and Wi-Fi). Configure and maintain a VPN for the team.
  • Provide desktop support for staff computers (mostly OS X): fix problems with malware, maintain our current hardware, provide assistance with equipment specification, setup, problem resolution, and network support related to all our hardware and software.
  • Create and maintain effective and accurate technical documentation.

Job Requirements:

  • Deep and broad UNIX knowledge and skills, with expertise with standard UNIX utilities and programs.
  • Familiar with Macs.

  • Strong general networking background and security concepts (Firewalls, Routing, VPNs, HTTPS, SSL certificates etc.)
  • Diagnose and remedy network issues as they occur.
  • Experience with desktop security management and Mac desktop support.
  • Hands-on hardware maintenance and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience automating workflows, setting up cron jobs, writing and running shell scripts, etc.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Friendly, trustworthy, reliable and flexible. Willing to be in on-call rotation.
  • An interest in learning and keeping-up to date with new tools, trends and best practices.

When you join Survival, you're getting more than just a career: you're gaining a unique opportunity to be at the heart of one of the most exciting campaigning organizations around; it is not just a job. You will be working with a team of passionate people who really care about human rights and want to change the status quo.
  • Your work is at the very foundation of our organization. Keeping our systems running smoothly across all of our international offices is central to achieving our mission in the most efficient way.
  • Being part of a small team, you will not be pigeonholed by your job description. Your voice can count and we welcome your ideas.
  • We strive to be an equal opportunities employer, with a close-knit and friendly internal culture. We treat our employees well.
  • We have a pensions scheme and generous annual leave (25 days' holiday increasing with length of service + bonus days over Christmas and New Year).
  • MacBook Pro or similar.
  • Annual international team get-together.

This is a 2 day / 14 hours per week position (regular working hours to be arranged between 10am and 6pm Mondays to Fridays). The contract is for 12 months (renewable), with a 6-month probationary period. Salary £28-31k per annum pro rata.
