Collabora is looking for an experienced person to head our project management team. This is a high level role within Collabora, reporting to the COO, and is responsible for the management of a team of high calibre globally distributed Project Managers to successfully deliver all Collabora’s projects across a wide range of customers, contracts and technologies. The role will be based in our Cambridge UK or Montreal Canada office, or remotely with a substantial amount of working hours overlapping the UK and Montreal.
Collabora is a leading software consultancy specialising in bringing companies and the open source software community together. We combine years of open source software leadership with an understanding of the challenges that businesses, non-profits, and governments face. Collabora brings deep technical expertise in system integration, architecture, graphics, multimedia, web engines and communications to a number of market verticals, including mobile communications, IVI / automotive, set top box/smart TV, and a range of other specialised embedded applications.
The Delivery Team
Your team prepares all project proposals for Collabora, managing all internal and external projects. It is responsible for the whole project life cycle, starting with early conception, requirements capture, preparation of contract proposals and continues through all phases of project execution to successful completion.
Each Project Manager manages a number of projects depending on their sizes and complexity. They interface internally and externally at all levels and in all aspects of getting projects completed successfully and to customer satisfaction. Project teams are formed for each project according to the required skills and locality. Engineers are drawn from a central pool, Project Managers manage these engineers on a project level, their line management is the responsibility of the engineering team.


  • Working closely with the senior management team (Sales, Marketing, Finance, POps, Engineering) to see the bigger picture and to ensure the smooth running of the project management team. Escalate to the COO as appropriate although this should be rare as you should be able to deal with most issues and resolve matters locally.
  • Maintain a high level project portfolio dashboard showing clear and concise status, metrics and KPIs. Have a clear visibility of all project status and profitability. You will be measured on how successful proposals and projects are managed and delivered.
  • Weekly, monthly and quarterly reports to the COO and wider audiences as required, highlighting achievements, future plans and improvements. Concise and informative reports are key, quality counts more than quantity.
  • Analyse monthly project and people data, extract essential business information and ensure effective operations.
  • Line management of a dynamic team of Project Managers, ensure they are well trained and have the right tools to deliver projects successfully. Develop career aspirations to match with company goals. Help to grow the team as required by the business.
  • Allocation of work to Project Managers. Manage projects in times of high demand. You will need to be comfortable running projects as well as managing people.
  • Support the Proposal Manager to produce high quality and timely project proposals for the whole company, and be able to step in and prepare proposals in times of high demand.
  • Process improvements and optimizations to consistently deliver company goals. The project management team has end-to-end processes which need to be managed and tracked.
  • Customer visits and international travel as required.

  • Your working skills and experience are likely to have been gained through positions of increasing responsibilities in technology companies of various sizes and complexity.
Commercial Skills
  • Proven track record in managing a diverse portfolio of projects
  • Excellent negotiator at all levels both internally and externally
  • Financially astute, have experience in growing a successful consultancy business
Technical Skills
  • Experience in running globally distributed teams across multiple time zones is essential
  • Hands-on experience in real-time embedded software development (e.g. system architecture, testing, build & integration, releases and defect management), ideally in an open source environment
  • Agile software development methodologies
Personal Skills
  • Strong people and project management skills, especially the ability to motivate others and build team morale
  • Diplomatic, flexible, adaptable, good listener and encourages creative ideas
  • Professional and highly organized with a commitment to quality and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure, plan workload and operate to guidelines
  • Excellent presentation skills to audiences at all levels. Able to get essential points across and not creating more questions than answers
  • Identify risks and escalate appropriately with a mitigation plan where necessary
  • Get things done behind the scene rather than the fire fighting hero, going the extra mile when required
  • Fluent in English (and French if based in Montreal)
  • Good bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Knowledge of implementing and rolling out QMS based on CMMI or ISO would be an advantage
  • Professional project management qualification also an advantage
